Atharvaveda Frist Kand - Fifth Sukta

The water deity is worshiped in the 5th Sukta of the first Kanda of Atharvaveda. Its sage is Sindhudweep or Kriti. The verse used here is Gayatri. There are only 4 verses or mantras in this. Here water has been worshiped by describing its qualities.

आपोहिष्ठा मयोभुवस्ता न ऊर्जे दधातन । महेरणाय चक्षसे ॥ 1 ॥

The sage says through this verse – O water that gives happiness! You make us perfect to interview with Parabrahma, to enjoy happiness and to see the delightful elements.

यो वः शिवतमो रसस्तस्य भाजयतेह नः । उशतीरिव मातरः ॥ 2 ॥

Here the sage praises water and says – Just as mothers feed their children with love and give them confirmation, similarly O Jalo! Make us partakers of that juice and give us confirmation from the essence of the ultimate welfare juice that is in you.

तस्मा अरं गमाम वो यस्य क्षयाय जिन्वथ । आपो जनयथा च नः ॥ 3 ॥

Here the sages say – We want to get the company of that water which gives growth, which nourishes the living beings by producing food grains.

ईशाना वार्याणि तीश्चर्षणीनाम्। अपो याचामि भेषजम् ॥ 4 ॥

Here water is worshiped in the form of medicine. Sages say – water which cures the diseases of living beings by medicines, is endowed with divine qualities and is the master of pleasures. We worship that medicinal water.

Atharvaveda Frist Kand - Sixth Sukta

In the sixth Sukta of the Atharveda, the water deity is again worshipped. His Rishi is Sindhudweep and the verses used in it are Gayatri, Parnti. In this, the divine qualities of water have been explained. A special thing has been said in this sukta that the element of fire is present in the water and apart from this the description of underground water is found. These things reveal the greatness of Vedas. From this it is also understood that at what height the science of Hinduism is.

शं नो देवीरभिष्टय आपो भवंतु पीतये । शं योरभि स्रवन्तु नः ॥ 1 ॥

In this verse, while praising water, the sage says – O water with divine qualities! You are the one who fulfills our wishes, is pleasant, is able to be consumed and is the one who gives complete peace.

अप्सु मे सोमो अब्रवीदन्तदर्विश्वानि भेषजा । अग्निं च विश्वशम्भुवम् ॥ 2 ॥

This verse is amazing in itself, a lot of scientific things have been said here. The sage says through this verse – Som has preached that all divine medicines are present in water and the fire god who brings joy and welfare to the whole world is also present.

आपः पृणीत भेषजं वरूथं तन्वे मम । ज्योक् च सूर्यं दृशे ॥ ३ ॥

Here the sage invokes water and says – O water! You give us medicines for the prevention of diseases and make our bodies healthy so that we can keep seeing the sun forever.

शं न आपो धन्वन्याः शमु सन्त्वनूप्याः शं नः खनित्रिमा आपः । शमु याः कुंभ आभूताः शिवा नः सन्तु वार्षिकीः ॥ 4 ॥

This verse is also very important. Here we are talking about underground water. The sage says through this verse – May the water of a waterless country be pleasant for us, may the water of a watery country provide happiness. May the water from the well dug out from the ground and the water brought in a pitcher bring happiness. Similarly, the water received from rain should also be beneficial.
